Year 4 - Autumn

In English I will be learning about:

  • Writing Instructions
  • Historical stories – planning, drafting writing and editing our historical story
  • Diary entry – exploring the lives of children during Victorian times and then writing a diary entry
  • Explanations
  • I will be working hard on improving my reading, spelling, handwriting, punctuation and grammar.

In Maths I will be learning about:

  • Number – counting, place value, fractions and decimals
  • Use written methods for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division
  • Shape and space – 2D and 3D shapes, angles, position and direction
  • Data handling – collecting, recording and interpreting information
  • Different aspects of measurement including perimeter and area.
  • Problem solving and using our skills in money and measurement

We will also be working hard to develop our mental skills and consolidate our times tables.


In creative curriculum I will be learning about:

  • The Victorians – Year 4 find out more about scientific discoveries that were made and investigate the differences between the lives of rich and poor victorian children. In Art and DT the children will develop portrait skills and painting in the style of Lowry.
  • In ICT we will look at E-safety and databases. 

In Science I will be learning about:

  • States of Matter - classify materials as solids, liquids or gases, understand evaporation and condensation as part of the water cycle.
  • Sound - how sounds are made, how pitch and volume can be changed
  • Electricity - how to make circuits and understand what conductors are.
  • Through all our science units they will be developing the skills of prediction, observation, measuring and fair testing.


  • Reading, spellings and times tables are best practised daily.
  • PE kit should be brought into school on Monday and taken home on a Friday. Pupils should have appropriate PE kit as stated in the school prospectus.
  • Homework:  to be completed in homework book/folder and returned to school
  • Some classes will be going swimming every Monday.  (Children need a costume/trunks, towel and swimming cap) Swimming caps can be purchased from school for £1.20
  • Please provide your child with a water bottle.


You can help us to help your child by:-

  • Talking to your child about school and their day.
  • Testing them with their spellings and times tables daily.
  • Listening to them read and asking questions about what they have read.
  • Asking to see their homework and talking to them about it.
  • Contacting school if you have any concerns.
  • Reminding them of the importance of doing their best at school.
  • Making sure they have a good nights sleep and some breakfast so they come to school properly rested and ready to enjoy the school day.
