“The more you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go.” - Dr. Seuss
At Oak Primary, we believe that reading is the most important skill that you can acquire. It is the foundation upon which all learning is based and, as such, it is vital to the success of our students during their time with us, and as they move on to their next step.
Central to our approach is our desire to nurture a love of reading within the school community, using a wide variety of engaging texts and carefully considered activities which enable our children to develop strategies to interrogate works by a range of authors.

Oak Primary is also part of a pilot scheme in Kirklees for the Lexonik and Lexonik Leap reading programmes.

Reading Friends
The quote above is from ‘I can Read with My Eyes Shut’ by Dr. Seuss, and it is something we believe in passionately at Oak. As such, we do everything we can to ensure that your children become confident, independent and thoughtful readers. We also know that parents play an enormous role in this, and that children gain a huge amount from parental input. With this in mind, we ask for parents' help in implementing our successful reading Friends programme in school.
Reading Friends is a paired reading project, which involves adult volunteers giving up an hour per week to read with pupils in schools. The Reading Friends training course, run by Kirklees Success Centres, enables volunteers to gain a good grounding in useful strategies to use when reading with children. On average, children improve in their reading age by up to 9 months after an 8 - 10 week programme, becoming more confident and inspired readers.
We welcome anyone (parents, carers, grandparents, neighbours) who has time to spare to help in our journey to create a positive, successful and rewarding reading environment in our school. If you are interested, please let Miss Wilkin, Ms Fischler or the school office know.
Reading Assemblies
Each week, we hold assemblies to promote a love of reading throughout the school at all levels. In Key Stage 2, the children in each class take responsibility for presenting their own assembly. Here are a few examples:
