OPAL at Our School
At Oak CE Primary School, we are proud to be part of the OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning) Primary Programme, a nationally recognised initiative that supports schools in transforming playtimes to improve children’s well-being, physical health, and learning.
Through OPAL, we believe that play is a fundamental part of childhood and that high-quality play experiences contribute significantly to pupils’ social, emotional, and academic development. Our aim is to create an outdoor environment that is inclusive, engaging, and inspiring for every child.
What OPAL Means for Our Pupils
- Happier, more active playtimes: Children have access to a wide range of play opportunities that encourage creativity, teamwork, exploration, and physical activity.
- Improved social skills: Pupils learn to negotiate, collaborate, take risks safely, and support one another.
- Enhanced well-being: A richer play environment reduces anxiety, promotes resilience, and helps children return to learning calm, focused, and ready.
- Inclusive play for all: OPAL ensures that every child—regardless of age, ability, or need—has meaningful play experiences every day.
Our OPAL Approach
We are developing our outdoor spaces to include:
- Loose parts for creative and imaginative play
- Opportunities for construction, role play, den building and problem-solving
- Zones for physical activity, exploration and sensory play
- All-weather play areas that promote year-round outdoor learning
Our staff are trained to support purposeful play, helping children become independent, confident, and collaborative learners.
Why We Invest in OPAL
- Play contributes to better behaviour and improved engagement in lessons
- Children become more resilient and confident
- Playtimes become calmer, safer, and more enjoyable
- The whole school community, including families, benefits from a positive play culture
Working With Families
We regularly invite families to get involved by donating materials, attending play sessions, and supporting outdoor events. Together, we can make play a valued and celebrated part of school life.
